Today, Ukraine has been promised support from the EU of 50 billion euros. This will help the Ukrainian military and the Ukrainian people in the freedom struggle against Russia.
But having said that, significantly more financial resources are needed for the Ukrainian state to maintain the welfare services in the country and at the same time maintain a high level of defense activity.
We must also not forget the USA as a significant financial contributor, both military and humanitarian, and as a sparring partner for the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian military.
Although there have been times when aid to the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian military has been slow at times, today there are around 50 economically strong countries that support the Ukrainian people and their president and in the future will also provide significant support to the country.
But the first days after the Russian invasion were not exciting for the Ukrainian president when he called around to heads of state, they were discouraging and pessimistic conversations, “give up and flee” was the overarching theme of the conversations.
But with a continuous rearmament from both sides in the conflict, this will lead to even more killed soldiers and civilians. As I have often pointed out, I miss diplomatic attempts to mediate the conflict.
There must be a head of state who can realize that this situation is completely unsustainable both for the Russian and Ukrainian people and the world community as a whole.
Today there is talk that we are not living in the post-war era but the pre-war era, several military personnel are making statements that Russia will be able to attack NATO within the next 3-5 years. A Danish military analyst expects that Russia might want to test NATO’s muskets by attacking an uninhabited area in Finland.
Both Germany, Sweden and several of the countries in the old Soviet bloc also have strong war rhetoric. I would be very surprised if Russia has any desire or plans to attack NATO. I think this rhetoric of war should be toned down. As I have mentioned before, it was both the American ambassador in Moscow in 1990-91 and James Baker who have been aware of the disputes over Ukraine and Crimea “separated completely from Russia”. Early in February, the Russian president will visit the Turkish president and it is obvious that diplomatic working papers will be drawn up which can be submitted to Ukraine and Russia. Stor dag for Ukraine 1 februar 2024
